Leg cramps are a common and usually harmless condition where the muscles in our leg suddenly become tight and painful. It usually occurs while we are sleeping. It happens in the calf or in the thighs and feet. It wake us up in the middle of the night and last fore few seconds or minutes. In some cases the pain fades away quickly, but the muscles soreness may linger for the rest of the night.
Leg cramps vs. restless leg syndrome.
The only similarity about these two syndromes is that the both occur during sleeping hours, but they are completely different conditions.
The restless leg syndrome does not cause pain or cramping, it is actually a discomfort or crawling feeling in our legs. If we move the leg in the restless leg syndrome offers relief, what doesn’t happens with leg cramps.
Causes of leg cramps:
- Sitting improperly
- Standing on concrete floors
- Sitting for prolonged time
- Certain medication
- Some exercises
Leg cramps can also appear in some medical conditions such as dehydration, endocrine disorders, neuromuscular disorders, liver diseases, and Parkinson’s disease.
Treatment and Prevention

- Take a warm bath before going to sleep
- Do water exercise to build leg muscles
- Stretch your legs before sleeping

- Sit on the floor and amplify both legs in front of you. Flex your feet at the lower legs and point your toes toward your knees

- Shake your legs to improve blood circulation
- Rub the region in a roundabout movement
- Make sure your covers and sheets are not tight
- Take a tablespoon of yellow mustard.
